The 2013 Great Southern Art Award winners were announced a few weeks ago and I was lucky enough to take out the “Photo Media” category with my image “Careened”.

I don’t normally post images of myself on the blog (I’m far more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it,) but thought I would make an exception this time……so here is moi and my winning image.

Showcasing artworks from both established and emerging local artists, the Great SOuthern Art Award exhibition runs until Sunday 28th April at the Vancouver Arts Centre in Albany. So much artistic talent in this neck of the woods – don’t miss it!!

A few weekends back – we were very fortunate to have the PIAF Visual Arts Program Manager – Margaret Moore – down in Albany to visit us during our ‘artist talks’. I also was commissioned by MIX to officially record the exhibition. It’s all been pulled down now – so this blog post is a little late – but here is the work I exhibited….

Working to the theme of “LightHouse”, I was interested in exploring the cyclical and transient nature of the lighthouse’s sweeping beam and how it ordinarily leaves no mark as it revolves. I drew on these notions to create a series of photographic images that provide a record of permanency, capturing light and the movement of light.

The work is available for purchase @ $250.00 each or $700.00 for a set of 3.

Lucky me was invited to join MIX Artists’ Incorporated late last year! MIX’s purpose is to foster and promote contemporary art by artists in the Great Southern region of WA. And the first MIX project that I am involved in is ‘Light-HOUSE’ –   a group exhibition that is being held at the  WA Museum in Albany as a part of PIAF’s (Perth International Arts Festival) Great Southern Festival.

It’s going to be amazing!! I encourage you to head along – I promise you it will be unlike any other exhibition you have been to. This MIX group of artists are just so talented and the work they are creating is pretty darn cool. See below for all the important bits of info……

Also, be sure to grab a copy of the Great Southern Festival’s program and start filling up your calenders with all the other great stuff to do and see – there is something for everyone. We are so lucky to have one of the most revered regional celebrations of arts and culture right on our doorstep!! Here is a link to the online program.

There was a great turn out and so much support from the local community for this, our most recent guerilla pop UP. Thanks to everyone who stepped into the phone box to check out the art!!
